Battery monitoring
Batteries are an integral part of any DC power system and are often the first line of defence against power failure. As such, their guaranteed performance is critical. Routine periodic testing is essential to evaluate system integrity but continuous monitoring of individual battery cells and other important parameters within DC systems allows advance warning of serious battery faults and detrimental system conditions.
Battery performance deteriorates with age and this is exacerbated by other factors such as insufficient maintenance and adverse operating conditions. Incorrect temperature and a poor charging regime are the two most common site problems found when diagnosing premature failure in battery systems. Although some batteries may fail catastrophically during float charge, many will not show any obvious sign of weakness until required to support a load.
By monitoring a wide range of system parameters, the Masterguard PPBatt DC monitoring system makes it possible to identify the root causes of premature failure in advance of any damage being done and a battery failure occurring. This helps ensure that the health of critical DC systems is maintained and that the battery will perform as expected when required.
The system is designed in a modular way such that any size of installation can be monitored practicably and cost effectively. The basic building blocks are:
- The battery measurement modules BMM, which interfaces to the battery blocks or system sensors and pickups.
- The optical data converter which co-ordinates multiple CCB units and can transfer system data automatically.
- The software 'front end', or user interface.
